From the Roots Up: Why We Start With the Tree
In the woodworking world, most projects start at a lumberyard with a pre-cut board. At Wild Edge Woodcraft, we like to go a few steps further back. For us, the story doesn't start at the checkout counter—it starts in the forest, or more often, right in our own neighborhoods.
While many shops buy their wood sight-unseen, we prefer to start with the tree.
The "Tree-to-Treasure" Philosophy
We specialize in urban wood upcycling. These are trees that have lived long lives as backyard shade-givers or local landmarks before storm damage or disease brought them down. By starting with the tree, we control every chapter of its transformation:
The Cut: We use our own sawmills to decide exactly how to open a log to reveal the most dramatic grain.
The Cure: We use iDRY vacuum kilns to ensure the wood is perfectly stabilized for your home, preventing the warping or cracking that often plagues "green" wood.
The Edge: Because we handle the milling, we can preserve that authentic "Wild Edge" that gives our company its name.
Have Your Own Story? We Can Mill It.
Starting with the tree isn't just something we do—it’s something we can do for you. We know that sometimes the most meaningful piece of furniture is the one that grew in your own backyard.
We are always happy to work with clients who bring in their own logs or boards. Whether you have a fallen oak with sentimental value that needs professional milling and kiln-drying, or you’ve already found a unique set of boards you want us to craft into a finished heirloom, our shop is open to your materials. We take pride in helping you finish the story your tree started.
Visit the Slab Wall
Not everyone is looking for a full custom build from scratch, and that’s where our Slab Wall comes in.
If you’re a DIYer or a fellow maker looking for high-quality, local lumber, we keep a curated selection of pre-cut, kiln-dried slabs ready for purchase. These are pieces we’ve already milled, dried, and leveled, showing off the incredible character of North Carolina hardwoods. You can walk in, find the perfect grain, and take a piece of the "Wild Edge" home to your own workshop.
The Wild Edge Difference
Whether we’re harvesting a local giant, milling a log you brought us, or helping you pick the perfect piece off our slab wall, the goal remains the same: honoring the wood. We aren't just building furniture; we’re preserving a legacy. From the standing timber to the final finish, we make sure the spirit of the tree lives on in your home.
